Summary

TeeTracker is an offline app. There is no user account, no server of ours, no advertising, no tracking and no analytics or crash reports. All your rounds, scores, courses and playing partners stay on your device. Copies are only created where you set them up yourself: in the device backup of Android or iOS and, if you switch it on, as a backup file in a folder of your choice. If you connect a Garmin watch, the recording of the round goes to Garmin via Garmin Connect (section 3 d). The internet is only used for the map (with telemetry from the map provider Mapbox, which you can switch off) and for the optional course search and course import.

1. What data the app stores on your device

Everything below is stored exclusively in a local database on your phone or your watch. It is not transmitted to us or to third parties:

Data Purpose
Your user name, your HCPI, language, map display, your club bag Profile and handicap calculation
Scorecards: strokes, putts, penalty strokes, club per stroke, timestamps Round history and statistics
GPS positions of individual strokes Stroke distances and shot trail on the map
Names and HCPI of your playing partners Multi-player scorecards
Courses you created or imported, including coordinates Course management
Training notes and exercises Training section
Motion data of the watch during a swing (gyroscope, acceleration) Stroke detection and swing analysis; the readings are evaluated on the watch and not stored

This data is deleted from the device when you uninstall the app or delete the app data in the Android or iOS settings. Copies in the backups described below remain until you delete them there.

Backups

Copies of this data are only created in the following ways. In none of these cases do we receive any data.

  • Backup by the operating system: If Google Backup is switched on on your Android device, Android includes the app's database in the device backup at Google and restores it when you reinstall the app. On the iPhone the same applies to the iCloud device backup, if you use it. You switch these backups on or off in your device settings; the terms of Google or Apple apply.
  • Automatic backup to a folder of your choice: If you switch on “Back up automatically” in the settings, the app saves a backup file after finished rounds and after changes to a folder that you select yourself, for example on the device, in Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud Drive. The file contains the same data as a manual export (table above, without the watch's motion data). If the folder is with a cloud provider, that provider's app uploads the file according to its own rules; the privacy terms of that provider apply to the processing there. With the “Wi-Fi only” option, the app only saves the file while your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network. The app keeps at most ten of its own backup files in the folder and deletes older ones; it neither reads nor changes other files in the folder. You can switch the function off at any time; files already saved remain until you delete them.
  • Manual export: see section 3, “Export you trigger yourself”.

Note on playing partners: If you enter the names and handicaps of other people, you are processing their personal data. This is your responsibility; please obtain their consent.

2. Location data

The app needs the permission for precise location to calculate distances to the green and to hazards during a round and to place strokes on the map.

  • The location is processed locally and stored locally.
  • During a round in progress, a foreground service runs with a persistent notification so that GPS stays active even when the display is off. The service ends when you finish the round.
  • Android: The app does not request background location and does not track you outside a round in progress.
  • iPhone: iOS has no foreground service. So that a round keeps measuring even with the phone in your pocket, the app uses the background location function of iOS — exclusively during a round in progress. iOS indicates this with the location icon in the status bar.
  • Garmin watch: If you count a stroke on a connected Garmin watch, the watch sends its position at that moment to the phone so that the stroke is stored at the right place. The position is stored locally like any other stroke position (section 3 d).

3. Transmission of data to third parties

Only these cases leave your device:

a) Map display — Mapbox

The map is loaded from Mapbox Inc. (USA). To display the appropriate map tiles, the Mapbox SDK sends technically necessary requests from which your approximate whereabouts can be derived. Mapbox's privacy policy applies: mapbox.com/legal/privacy

Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of the core function). The transfer to the USA is based on the standard contractual clauses or the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

Mapbox telemetry. In addition, the Mapbox SDK by default sends anonymised usage and location data to Mapbox, which Mapbox uses to improve its maps. This data is not linked to you personally; we do not receive it. You can switch the telemetry off at any time: via the (i) icon at the bottom of the map. Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (Mapbox's legitimate interest in improving the maps), with the option to object via this switch.

b) Course search and course import — OpenStreetMap / Overpass

When you search for courses nearby, import a course from OpenStreetMap, or reload the fairway geometry for a course you have already created, the app sends a search area to an Overpass API: for the search, a radius around your current location; for the import, a rectangle around the spot you selected on the map; for reloading, one around the course's already stored coordinates. Only a server hosted in the EU is queried:

  • overpass-api.de — FOSSGIS e. V., Germany

With the request, the app sends a technical client identifier (user agent “TeeTracker”), because the server rejects requests without one. It names the app, not you or your device.

This only takes place when you actively trigger the search, the import or the reload.

c) Connected Wear OS watch

Rounds are synchronised between the phone and the paired watch via Google Play services. This connection is a local device pairing; the data does not go through our servers. On the iPhone there is no Wear OS connection; a Garmin watch can be connected (section 3 d).

d) Connected Garmin watch

There is a TeeTracker app for Garmin watches, which you install through the Connect IQ Store. It works only together with the TeeTracker app on your phone. The two communicate through the Garmin Connect app on the phone and the Bluetooth pairing of your watch. This connection is a local device pairing; the data does not go through our servers.

What the phone sends to the watch: the name of the course, the display names of the players, par, length and handicap stroke index of the holes, the flag position, the strokes, the score line, the shape of the holes (fairway, green, bunker, water, trees) and the strokes played so far on the current hole. Of this, the watch stores what it needs for the round (the state of the round and the hole shapes) in its app storage. Deleting the app on the watch removes this data again.

What the watch sends to the phone: the strokes you count on the watch, the hole you are currently playing, and the position of the watch at the moment you count a stroke. The watch sends nothing else.

What TeeTracker does not do: The app does not send any of this data to us or to third parties. It does not read your Garmin account and does not access other activities, health data or contacts on the watch.

Recording on the watch: During a round, the watch records a golf activity with time and GPS track. This is the recording function that Garmin provides for every activity. When you finish the round, the watch saves the activity; it is transmitted to Garmin via Garmin Connect and is then stored in your Garmin account. If you cancel the round, the watch discards the recording. If you leave the app in the middle of a round, what has been recorded up to that point is saved. Garmin's privacy terms apply to the processing at Garmin: garmin.com/en-US/privacy/connect. There you can also delete the activity.

Export you trigger yourself

Via “Export/Share” you can output your data as a file and pass it on yourself. Where it goes is up to you; the app does not transmit anything on its own. The same applies to the automatic backup (section 1, “Backups”): it only writes to the folder you have selected.

4. Permissions at a glance

Permission Purpose
Precise/approximate location Distances and stroke positions during the round
Foreground service (location) GPS stays active when the display is off
Notifications Display of the GPS service's notification
Keep device awake The GPS service stays active during the round, even when the display goes off. Granted on installation and ends with the round.
Internet Map tiles, course search, course import
Network status For the “Wi-Fi only” option of the automatic backup: checking whether a Wi-Fi network is currently available
Bluetooth (iPhone only) Connection to a Garmin watch via the Garmin SDK; only requested when you connect a Garmin watch

The Garmin watch app requests the Connect IQ permissions Communications (connection to the phone), Positioning (position) and Fit (record activity) on the watch. Garmin displays them on installation.

5. What the app does not do

  • No user accounts, no registration, no login
  • No advertising and no advertising IDs
  • No analytics SDK, no crash reporting, no tracking
  • No disclosure or sale of data
  • No access to contacts, camera, microphone or address book
  • No voice control and no speech recognition

6. Your rights

Since we do not store any data about you, claims against us for access, rectification and erasure come to nothing — there is simply nothing we hold about you. You have full control:

  • Access/portability: export function in the settings
  • Erasure: delete the app data or uninstall the app; delete backup files in the folder you chose for the automatic backup
  • Withdrawal: revoke the location permission in the Android or iOS settings (the app remains usable, only without GPS functions); switch off the Mapbox telemetry via the (i) icon on the map

You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.

7. Children

The app is not specifically aimed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.

8. Changes

This policy is updated when the app's functions change. The date above shows the latest version.
